BERTIE will be harvested next Tuesday, 7th October. Time is running out for his chance to grow. Will BERTIE be a big as last year? How will the summer drought affected his growth? We will know next Tuesday…….

There haven't been any visible changes to BERTIE's condition in the last week. We are interested in whether the crack in his crown holds water when it rains. If the water runs out and away, this will reduces his chances of being affected by fusarium root rot.

It has been a while since we last visited BERTIE the BEET to check how is getting on.

He seems to have got through the hot August weather without too many problems. The large crack in his top (crown) may cause some problems later in the year; we will keep an eye on any developments.

A lot of the older, larger leaves that were wilted in August have turned a light yellow colour and are dying off. There are several younger, smaller leaves that are growing in the centre of the plant.

BERTIE has received a fungicide application, flusilazole + carbendazim @ 0.625l/ha in 200 litres of water (24-7-2003), to protect him from powdery mildew infection.
